Wooyoung was born in Ilsan, Gyeonggi-do Province, South Korea. He has two brothers, a younger brother and an older brother who is currently in the army. He attended Hanlim Multi Arts High School, where he studied alongside Tag from Golden Child and Bin Haneul from Idol School. Wooyoung interned at BigHit Entertainment before joining KQ Entertainment, where he eventually joined ATEEZ.
He participated in the survival show MIXNINE, where he was ranked 57th during the Just Dance showcase. Although he did not win the show, the experience strengthened his resolve to become an accomplished artist.
